BERLIN, GERMANY, June 22, 2005 - As the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on the horizon, two women´s teams from China shared the "spotlight" after winning matches in the third-round of the winner´s bracket here Wednesday on the Schloßplatz to pace eight undefeated tandems in the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships.

Billed as the world´s biggest and richest Beach Volleyball party, teams from Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands and the United States also posted victories in the women´s winner´s bracket Wednesday. Play continues in the US$1-million event Thursday with 16 women´s and 32 men´s matches on the six sand courts on the Schloßplatz.

Headlining the Chinese effort were fifth-seeded Tian Jia/Wang Fei and 26th-seeded Li Ying/Lu Wang. After defeating a team from Germany Wednesday, Tian Jia and Wang Fei face Cuba´s Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea Peraza. The 13th-seeded Cubans upset fourth-seeded Leila Barros and Ana Paula Connelly of Brazil to advance.

Li Ying and Lu Wang scored their third-straight win of the competition by defeating 23rd-seeded Efthalia Koutroumanidou and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece. Li Ying and Lu Wang, who upset seventh-seeded Agatha Bednarczuk and Sandra Pires of Brazil Tuesday, now face 15th-seeded Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren of the Netherlands. The Dutch women defeated a team from Cuba Thursday.

Eighth-seeded Vassiliki Karadassiou and Vassiliki Arvaniti of Greece will challenge top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil in the first of eight winner´s bracket third-round matches Thursday. Karadassiou and Arvaniti posted Greece´s best-ever finish on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour two weeks ago in Milan with an Italian Open silver medal after losing the title match to Juliana and Larissa.
Reigning Olympic and SWATCH-FIVB World Champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh also won their third match of the competition Wednesday by defeating third-seeded Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs in a meeting of the top two teams from United States domestic tour.
After advancing with a win over a Swiss tandem, sixth-seeded Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau of Germany will play the 19th-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh. The match will be the eighth-meeting between the two teams with the Americans winning the previous seven contests.
With 16 other teams from 10 countries also remaining in the double-elimination competition with one loss each, four of the top eight-seeded teams will be competing in Thursday´s contender´s bracket matches, including, two-time SWATCH-FIVB World Champions Shelda Bedê and Adriana Behar of Brazil.
The second-seeded Shelda and Adriana play 17th-seeded Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen of Norway in an opening elimination match Thursday. The Brazil/Switzerland winner will play either Bednarczuk/Pires or ninth-seeded Susanne Lahme/Danja Müsch of Germany.
Wacholder and Youngs face 46th-seeded Helke Claasen and Antje Roder of Germany, who eliminated Athens bronze medallist Holly McPeak and her new partner Jen Kessy on Tuesday. McPeak captured the Olympic medal with Youngs. The winner of that match plays either 11th-seeded Simone Kuhn/Lea Schwer of Switzerland or 37th-seeded Marie-Andree Lessard/Sarah Maxwell of Canada.
Leila and Ana Paula meet 48th-seeded Sara Goller/Laura Ludwig Germany with the winner playing either 22nd-seeded Marrit Leenstra/Sanne Keizer of Netherlands or 12th-seeded Rieke Brink-Abeler/Hella Jurich of Germany.
Other opening elimination matches Thursday have 16th-seeded Ethel-Julie Arjona/Virginie Kadjo of France against 34th-seeded Milagros Crespo/Imara Esteves Ribalta of Cuba with the victors playing the winner of the match between 41st-seeded Mayra Garcia/Hilda Gaxiola of Mexico and 23rd-seeded Efthalia Koutroumanidou/Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece.
The women´s final four matches will be played Friday afternoon with the medal matches Saturday on the Schloßplatz. The men conclude their action Sunday with morning semi-finals and afternoon medal matches. The winning teams in the third mixed gender event on the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour schedule split the $62,000 first-place prize.
