Brazilians Lead 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour
(巴西人在2005 SWATCH-FIVB世界巡回赛领先)
-----------------------------------------
Lausanne, Switzerland, June 20, 2005 - After claiming five of the six medals awarded this past weekend in Switzerland in the Alps village of Gstaad, Brazil moves its Beach Volleyball players to Berlin for the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships starting Tuesday with the women's competition and Wednesday for the men.
Led by Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca's third gold medal finish in four SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stops this season, Brazil advanced three teams to the "final four" of the women's Gstaad stop. Juliana and Larissa defeated Tian Jia and Wang Fei of China Saturday for the title while Brazil's Shelda Bedê/Adriana Behar claimed the bronze medal.
The Brazil men out-did the women the next day by claiming all three podium spots while advancing four teams to the semi-finals. Olympic and World Champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos out-scored Benjamin Insfran and Harley Marques for their first SWATCH-FIVB World Tour title this season. Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhães grabbed the Gstaad bronze medal.
(男沙“四强”则全是巴西人…………)
The All-Brazilian men's semi-finals marked only the third-time in 165 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour "open" events that one country dominated the "final four" pairings. Brazil also accomplished the feat at the 1996 Puerto Rico stop and matched that effort almost 11 months later in Turkey.
By collecting six of the nine men's medals awarded this season and filling eight of the 12 women's podium spots, Brazil dominates the rankings entering the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships. The South American country has won two of the three men's events this season while claiming all four of the women's gold medals.
Emanuel and Ricardo, who captured their SWATCH-FIVB World Championship in October 2003 on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, have finished second, third and first in the first three events this season to lead the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour men's standings with 1,080 team points and $70,000 in combined earnings. Emanuel and Ricardo have been the season's point's champions the past two years.
The Brazilian men's teams of Benjamin/Harley (second, 920 points), Marcio Araujo/Fabio (fourth, 720) and Franco Neto/Tande Ramos (tied for eight, 520) also rank among the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour point's leaders. Germany and Switzerland have three men's tandems each ranked among top 10 in team points.
Starting with last year's SWATCH-FIVB World Tour visit to Berlin, only Brazilians and Germans have topped the podium in 10 of the last 11 men's events. Emanuel and Ricardo have won five events for Brazil since the June 2004 visit to Berlin. Marcio Araujo has been part of the other two Brazilian medals with Benjamin (France 2004) and Fabio (Croatia 2005).
German gold medals during this stretch are the teams of Markus Dieckmann/Jonas Reckermann (Berlin 2004 and Rio de Janeiro 2004) and Christoph Dieckmann/Andreas Scheuerpflug (China 2005). The other gold medal since Berlin 2004 was a Mallorca title for the Laciga brothers (Martin and Paul) as they defeat Sascha Heyer and Markus Egger in the first-ever All-Swiss final. Martin is now playing with Egger and Paul with Heyer.
Juliana and Larissa have a 300-point lead over Shelda and Adriana as the young Brazilians have shared $118,000 in combined earnings. Other Brazilian women among the top 11 teams on the points list are the teams of Agatha BednarczukSandra Pires (eighth, 500 points), Talita Antunes/Renata Ribeiro (tied for ninth, 520) and Leila Barros/Ana Paula Connelly (tied for 11th, 480).
This weekend's SWATCH-FIVB World Championships marks the third of nine-straight weeks for the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in Europe. The $1-million SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Berlin concludes Saturday and Sunday for the women's and men's gold medal matches, respectively.
Playing internationally for the first-time last season, Juliana (22 years old) and Larissa (23) placed second to Shelda and Adriana on the 2004 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. With $242,000 in combined earnings for 14 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour starts together, Juliana and Larissa have a 73-19 FIVB career match mark together, including 23-2 this season. Nine of the losses have been to other Brazilian teams with other defeats being to teams from the United States (4), Czech Republic (2), Australia (1), Canada (1), Germany (1) and Norway (1).
The Berlin 2004 stop was the lowest placement on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event as Juliana and Larissa did not qualify for the Main Draw after being eliminated in the Qualification Tournament by a team from Norway. Juliana and Larissa have eight podium placements with four gold medals.
