Zhao is key to China's hopes of winning gold for the first time since 1984.
At a little under 6ft 5in, she is a huge presence in the team and has been a key part of thEIr recent rise to dominance in the women's game that most recently included winning the 2003 World Cup.

Be it blocking at the net or spiking the sets from captain Feng Kun, she is the hub of all her team's best play.

Zhao's father pushed her to play basketball in her youth, but by her teens she had turned to volleyball and has never looked back.

The 21-year-old first came to prominence three years ago when she finished top scorer at the Asian Championships, where she also picked up the best player award.

Despite her all-round court craft and speed, it is her height that draws the greatest interest and no doubt she will be dubbed "The Great Wall" before the medals are handed out.

Tom was part of the USA's 2000 Olympic squad which finished fourth and will be looking to go at least one better and win a medal this time around.

She left school in order to join the team ahead of the Sydney Games and in the last four years that choice has proved beneficial to her sporting education.

The 23-year-old wing-spiker was a four-time first-team All-American in her four seasons at Stanford University before starting her professional career earlier this year.

She was courted by a host of clubs around the world.

After a brief spell in Brazil at MRV/Minas with international team-mate Keba Phipps, she opted for a career in Italy with Monte Schiavo Jesi.

"I'm just going where life takes me at the moment," she said at the time, and with her Stanford degree on hold, she will be hoping life takes her to the podium in Athens.
