Chinese Women Achieve “Sweet Six” Success

Shanghai, China, May 27, 2006 - With a pair of elimination wins to open play here Saturday morning in the he US$400,000 China Shanghai Jinshan Open, China has now advanced three women’s teams to the “sweet six” at a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event to join five other countries in achieving the feat.
After 25th-seeded Xue Chen and Zhang Xi upset fourth-seeded Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes of Brazil 21-13 and 21-19, ninth-seeded Zhang Ying and Zuo Man posted a 21-17 and 21-19 victory over Australian Olympians and 10th-seeded Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson.
With the wins, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi challenge second-seeded Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil for a spot in Saturday afternoon’s first semi-finals against top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil. Adriana and Shelda will be seeking to return to the Jinshan Beach title match after losing to Juliana and Larissa in the 2005 Shanghai finale.
Zhang Ying and Zuo Man, who had to win two qualifying matches Wednesday to advance to the Main Draw, face fifth-seeded Vassiliki Arvaniti and Vasso Karadassiou of Greece with the winner advancing to the “final four” against third-seeded Tian Jia and Wang Jie of China.
After placing third, 13th and 17th in the season opening event at Modena, Italy, the Chinese women have returned home to post their best-ever finishes on the women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. The best previous effort by the Chinese women were a pair of teams reach the “elite eight” at five events, including twice in 2005, and once each in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Here is a breakdown:

For the Chinese men at the China Shanghai Jinshan Open, the ninth-place finish by Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu Thursday marked the best-ever result for China on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. Cheng Lu and Meng Qi posted China's previous best SWATCH finish for men with a 12th at the 1990 stop in Enoshima, Japan.
