SEOUL, Korea (July 3, 2005) C Nancy Metcalf and Tayyiba Haneef dominated on both offense and defense to lead the USA Women’s National Volleyball Team to a decisive 3-1 victory over Japan at the World Grand Prix Sunday at Seoul Student Gymnasium.
Metcalf (Hull, Iowa) scored a match-high 31 points and Haneef (Laguna Hills, Calif.) added 22 points in the 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 29-27 win on the final day of the second weekend of play in the women’s premier annual tournament.
Metcalf (seven blocks) and Haneef (six blocks) combined for 13 of Team USA’s match-high 19 blocks as the Americans stifled Japan’s quick attack to even their record at 3-3. Japan dropped to 4-2.
“Before the match I asked my players to stay calm in any situation during the match,” said Team USA head coach “Jenny” Lang Ping. “Their stability showed all through the match and they put up consistently good blocks. That's why we were able to win the match.”
Metcalf, the tournament’s leader scorer with 134 points (115 kills, 16 blocks, three service aces), added 24 kills in the win. It was the second-time in three matches that she surpassed the 30-point plateau. Metcalf had a career-high 38 points in a five-set loss to Korea on July 1. Haneef added 15 kills and one service ace on Sunday.
Outside hitter Kristin Richards (Orem, Utah) scored 14 points on 12 kills, one block and one ace and middle blocker Elisabeth Bachman (Lakeville, Minn.) posted 11 points on eight kills and three blocks.
Ai Otomo scored 19 points and Miyuki Takahashi added 17 points to lead four players in double-figures for Japan.
On the third weekend of pool play (July 8-10), the USA will play Thailand, Japan and Poland in Bangkok, Thailand, as a member of “Group I.”
The top five ranked teams after pool play will advance to the championship round along with the host team, Japan, from July 13-18 in Sendai, Japan.
