Brazilian & American Women Join Chinese in SWATCH-FIVB World Championships Spotlight

BERLIN, GERMANY, June 23, 2005 - Two teams from China will compete against tandems from Brazil and the United States after all four Beach Volleyball pairs posted victories here Thursday on the Schloßplatz in the US$1-million SWATCH-FIVB World Championships.

Fifth-seeded Tian Jia and Wang Fei challenge top-seeded Juliana Felisberta and Larissa Franca of Brazil in the first semi-final qualifying match Friday as the two teams meet for the third time this season and sixth-time overall. The two teams played for last week's gold medal in Switzerland with Juliana and Larissa winning 17-21, 21-15 and 15-8.

Reigning Olympic and World Champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States are challenged by 26th-seeded Li Ying and Lu Wang of China for the second "final four" berth. The semi-finals will be played Friday afternoon as four other teams from Brazil, Cuba, the Netherlands and the United States remain in the double-elimination competition.

Juliana and Larissa advanced unbeaten to Friday's play with a 21-14 and 21-18 win over eighth-seeded Vassiliki Karadassiou and Vassiliki Arvaniti of Greece. Tian Jian and Wang Fei scored a 21-18 and 21-15 victory over 13th-seeded Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea Peraza of Cuba.
May-Treanor and Walsh, who posted their 300th career match win together for both domestic and international events, defeated sixth-seeded Stephanie Pohl and Oklka Rau 21-19 and 21-17 before a capacity crowd of 8,000 on the Schloßplatz centre court. The 19th-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh have been playing together since 2001 with 183 of their match wins on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.
The "surprise" team of the competition, Li Ying and Lu Wang posted a 21-19 and 21-19 win over 15th-seeded Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren of the Netherlands. Playing in their seventh SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event, Li Ying and Lu Wang have never placed higher than 13th internationally.
Teams still in the elimination bracket are second-seeded Shelda Bedê and Adriana Behar of Brazil and third-seeded Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs of the United States along with Fernandez Grasset/Larrea Peraza and Kadijk/Mooren.
Wacholder and Youngs play the Cubans with the winners playing the loser of the USA/China match for a spot in the "final four." Shelda and Adriana are challenged by the Dutch tandem with the victors playing the loser of the Brazil/China match for the fourth semi-final berth.
Following the women's "final four" matches Friday afternoon; the medal matches will be played Saturday on the Schloßplatz centre court. The men conclude their action Sunday with morning semi-finals and afternoon medal matches. The winning teams in the third mixed gender event on the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour schedule split the $62,000 first-place prize.
