Warsaw SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Finale Features Chinese Women

Warsaw, Poland, September 2, 2006 - For the second-time this season, two women’s teams from China will compete for a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal after the tandems Tian Jia/Wang Jie and Xue Chen/Zhang Xi defeated Beach Volleyball pairs from Brazil and Russia here Saturday to advance to the finals of the US$200,000 GE Money Bank Warsaw Open.

Sunday’s finale will be the second-time the two teams have met this week as the second-seeded Tian Jia and Wang Jie defeated their third-seeded Chinese rivals 21-15 and 25-23 Friday afternoon in a GE Money Bank Warsaw Open quarter-final match.

Friday’s meeting was the sixth meeting between the two Chinese teams as Tian Jia and Wang Jie have posted five-straight wins of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, including a bronze medal victory in June at the Switzerland Grand Slam stop in Gstaad. Xue Chen and Zhang Xi’s only win was a 23-21 and 21-14 gold medal effort May 28 in Shanghai in the first match between the two teams.

“It was our plan to reach the final here,” said the 21-year old Wang Jie, who teamed with the 25-year old Tian Jia to capture the last SWATCH stop last month in Klagenfurt, Austria, “and we did it. We are happy that we will play another Chinese team Sunday. It will be a very competitive final. We’ll be looking to avenge our gold medal defeat in Shanghai. That was our most disappointing defeat this season."

Tian Jia and Wang Jie advanced to their third gold medal match this season with a 21-12, 14-21 and 15-13 semi-final win in 51 minutes over top-seeded Leila Barros and Ana Paula Connelly of Brazil. It was Tian Jia and Wang Jie’s first win in six matches against the Brazilians, who had defeated the Chinese for a bronze medal in Marseille and in the semi-finals at Montreal.

Xue Chen, who at 17, became the youngest player ever to win a professional Beach Volleyball gold medal in Shanghai, and the 21-year old Zhang Xi also reached their third gold medal match this season by defeating 20th-seeded Alexandra Shiryaeva and Natalya Uryadova of Russia 21-15, 19-21 and 15-11 in 53 minutes.

Shiryaeva and Uryadova, who are seeking Russia’s first-ever medal in the 15-year history of the women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in Sunday’s third-place match against Leila and Ana Paula, had gained a “wild card” spot in the GE Money Bank Warsaw Open Main Draw after winning last week’s European Championships in the Netherlands.
"We lost to the Chinese tandem, but we are extremely happy we managed to reach the semi-finals,” said the 29-year old Uryadova. “We could not even expect it at the start of the competition. Our Chinese rivals served very well and it was their key to the success. They showed great skills.”
Both the teams of Xue Chen/Zhang Xi and Leila/Ana Paula had to win elimination matches over tandems from Norway earlier Saturday to reach the semi-finals. For the Norwegians, it marked the best-ever finishes for a pair of women’s teams from their country in the same event.
Xue Chen and Zhang Xi scored a 21-19 and 21-19 win in 41 minutes over eighth-seeded Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen. Leila and Ana Paula, who will be seeking their sixth SWATCH podium placement in 22 FIVB starts together, gained a spot in the “final four” with a 21-18 and 23-21 victory over 23rd-seeded Susanne Glesnes and Kathrine Maaseide in 41 minutes.
The first women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event to be held in Poland, the GE Money Bank Warsaw Open concludes Sunday with the medal matches as the final two teams compete for the $32,000 first-place prize. Following this week’s event, the women’s international circuit takes next week off before resuming September 13-17 in the Madeira Islands at Porto Santo.
