LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, July 21, 2008 - After staging 29 men's and 28 women's qualifying events for the Beijing 2008 Olympics the past 15 months, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour concludes its pre-Summer Games schedule the next two weeks with Grand Slam events in Switzerland and Austria.
With the Beach Volleyball competition at the Beijing Summer Games beginning in 18 days, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour takes center stage the next two weeks starting with the US$600,000 1to1 energy Grand Slam in Gstaad, Switzerland. Qualifying starts Tuesday leading to Saturday’s medal matches for women and the men’s "final four" contests Sunday.
The 1to1 energy Grand Slam will be staging a women's SWATCH FIVB World Tour for the ninth-straight season while the men will be competing for the eighth-consecutive year in the Swiss Alps. The 2007 Gstaad stop featured the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships where the American teams of Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers and Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh captured the men's and women's gold medals, respectively.
With the Beijing Olympics looming, both American teams will miss this year's Swiss stop to remain in the United States to complete their Summer Games preparations. The 2007 Gstaad runners-up will headline this year's field at the 1to1 energy Grand Slam where the winning teams will share the $43,500 first-place prize.
美国男女沙排队将不参加瑞士和奥地利的大满贯赛事,以便集中全力备战北京奥运会。
China’s Jia Tian and Jie Wang lead the women's field after capturing the 2007 world championship silver medal. The Chinese pair will be seeded first in the women's Beijing Olympic competition after placing second to May-Treanor and Walsh on the Summer Games qualifying list with 5,500 points for their best eight SWATCH FIVB World Tour finishes from May 2007 through July 20, 2008.
Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky headline the men’s field after placing second to Dalhausser and Rogers in the 2007 world finale. The Russians finished the Olympic qualifying process as the seventh-ranked team for Beijing with 4,460 points for their best eight qualifying placements while the Americans topped the Beijing list.
The final SWATCH qualifier for Beijing was last week in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille where the gold medal winning teams of Brazilians Marcio Araujo/Fabio Magalhaes and Germans Stephanie Pohl/Okka Rau secured their Olympic berths. Both pairs entered the French finales without the pressure of having to capture the title to gain a spot in the Chinese capital competition.
By defeating Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado in the Marseille semi-finals, Marcio Araujo and Fabio eliminated their Brazilian rivals from Olympic consideration by posting a 220-point (4,860 to 4,640) advantage. In the finals, the seventh-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio netted their 11th SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal together by defeating top-seeded Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu of China 21-16 and 21-16.
Despite claiming their fifth SWATCH silver medal this season, Wu and Xu will be the top-seeded team in Beijing as the Chinese finished fifth on the Olympic qualifying list with 4,600 points for their eight best finishes on the international Beach Volleyball tour. All five of Wu and Xu's gold medal defeats this season have been to teams with more Beijing qualifying points, including a Russian Grand Slam setback to Dalhausser and Rogers in three sets.
中国男子沙排徐林胤-吴鹏根以积分4600分将作为北京奥运会男子沙排的1号种子…………
Pohl and Rau became the first German women's team to capture a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal by defeating second-seeded Maria Antonelli and Vanilda Leao of Brazil 21-17, 20-22 and 15-9. In reaching their first FIVB title match, the third-seeded Pohl and Rau withstood the Olympic bid by Rieke Brink-Abeler and Hella Jurich by finishing 480 points (3,700 to 3,220) ahead of their rivals for the second German women's berth in Beijing.
This week's Gstaad schedule will also feature the drawing of lots Saturday for the Beijing Olympics to determine the composition of the Preliminary Round pools for the Summer Games. The draw will be housed in the "Menuhin Festival' tent that will be complemented by musical entertainment and comedy shows.
The sixth and final Grand Slam stop on the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar is next week in Austria as Klagenfurt hosts the final pre-Olympic event. The 2008 Summer Games competition begins August 9 with the women's finale August 21 and the men's medal matches August 22.
