2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-21 World Championships The Best Teams to Play in Rio de Janeiro!
Rio's beauties will shortly be welcoming the world's best U-21 players.
Lausanne, Switzerland, 25 May, 2005 - The Brazilian Volleyball Federation confirmed yesterday to the FIVB that the U-21 World Championships would take place as planned in Rio de Janeiro, from 6 to 11 September.
So the scene is set for the world's 24 best teams of each gender, hailing from all five continents, to meet up in Brazil. The qualifying phase will include an additional 16 teams, making 40 in all. In 2003, the finals were held in the French city of Saint Quay Portrieux (Côtes d'Armor) which will play host to this year's SWATCH-FIVB Men's and Women's U-19 World Championships. In 2004 the U-21 teams met in Porto Santo, Portugal.
The teams that were the most successful in past competitions are the World Tour's current and future stars, and some have even gone on to win Olympic medals.
The Men's and Women's World Championships for players under 21 years of age are a veritable breeding ground for great talent, providing an opportunity for young athletes to play before avid fans. "There is immense interest in the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-21 World Championships, because this competition is a sort of universal training ground at the highest level for all the young men and women who bolster the ever-increasing popularity and image of Beach Volleyball. I wish all of these athletes an unforgettable experience on the sand of Brazil," said Dr Rubén Acosta, the FIVB President.
"By organising this great competition on another continent, specifically in Brazil, a nation where there is a very strong Beach Volleyball tradition, the FIVB programme for young players is taking another step forward this year", stated Angelo Squeo, Beach Volleyball coordinator at the FIVB's headquarters in Lausanne.
