China, U.S. split Women's "Final Four" at China Sanya Open
中国三亚公开赛 中国和美国进入年度收官半决赛
SANYA, CHINA, November 15, 2008 – Fifteenth-seeded Huang Ying/Zhang Xi of China and top seeds April Ross/Jennifer Boss split the last two top four berths here Saturday to make the women’s semi-finals of the US$350,000 SWATCH FIVB World Tour China Sanya Open presented by Olympic Garden an China-U.S. contest.
Huang/Zhang, who will represent Jiangsu province shoulder to shoulder in next year’s Chinese National Games, made the history after posting another two upset victories over 12th seeded Daniela Gioria/Giulia Momoli of Italy (21-13 and 21-18 in 41 minutes) and 13th seeded Karin Lundquist/Angelica Ljungquist of Sweden (21-17 and 21-11 in 45 minutes) Saturday to win six elimination matches in a row following an opening Main Draw loss to make top four.
They also recorded surprise wins over sixth seeded Stefanie Schwaiger/Doris Schwaiger of Austria, 10th seeds Tian Jia/Wang Fei and 16th seeds Xue Chen/Zhang Ying of China as well as Malaysian qualifiers Luk Teng Kee/Manokharan Iswari on their way to the China Sanya Open “final four’.
“It’s like a miracle. I have never had such experience at any SWATCH FIVB World Tour event, losing the first match to make top four,” said Zhang Xi, who teamed up with Xue Chen to win the bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in August. “Huang and me played better and better through this tournament and the experience will help us a lot in the preparation of the National Games.”
Making her debut at the prestigious SWATCH FIVB World Tour, the 16-year-old Huang appeared to be very shy in front to the media.
“I am very excited, I think I have played to my standard,” the 1.92-meter Huang, who served three aces in a row to end the match against Gioria and Momoli, dropped the words before looking for help from the 23-year-old Zhang.
Huang/ and hang will play Sunday morning the second seeded Nicole Branagh and Tyra Turner of the United States in the semi-finals where Ross and Boss face Wang Jie and Zuo Man of China.
Coming off Friday’s upset loss to ninth seeded Wang and Zuo, Ross and Boss bounced back to win three matches in a row in the elimination bracket to set up a rematch with the Chinese tandem.
“That made it tough for us. It’s the end of the season and everybody got very tired. But we can also have more time to get used to the weather and conditions,” said Ross. “Now we will have one day to rest and we’ll see how we are doing tomorrow.”
Boss and Ross battled for 77 minutes to land a come-from-behind 22-24, 21-18 and 15-12 win over third seeded Maria Antonelli and Vanilda Leao of Brazil in the last round of elimination bracket action. In the tiebreaker, the Americans jumped to a 7-3 start. The Brazilians steadily pulled within 10-9, only to find Ross and Boss take three of the next four points and hold on for the victory.
“We did it in a hard way,” said Ross. “We lost last time we met them, so we are very happy to win.”
The gold medal match of the 19th SWATCH FIVB World Tour Main Draw in 2008 for women is set for Sunday afternoon with the winners to share the $28,000 first-place prize.
The season-ending SWATCH FIVB World Tour stop is also the final double-gender event as top seeds Benjamin Insfran/Harley Marques beat fifth seeds Roberta Pitta/Pedro Cunha 21-17 and 21-19 in an all-Brazilian final Saturday afternoon to win the men’s gold medal of the China Sanya Open.
