Chinese & Dutch Seek SWATCH FIVB World Tour Men’s Gold
中国和荷兰争夺Swatch-FIVB巡回赛男沙金牌
ZAGREB, CROATIA, MAY 24, 2008 - Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu hope the “third time is the charm” as the Chinese men’s team won three matches here Saturday to advance to the finals of the US$175,000 VIP Open against Reindeer Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands.
After being defeated by Brazilians Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado in SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal matches earlier this season in Australia and China, Wu and Xu will be looking for a reversal of fortunes against the Dutch to become the first Chinese men’s team to win a title on the international Beach Volleyball circuit.
It will be the eighth SWATCH FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams with the Chinese holding a 5-2 edge. However, Nummerdor and Schuil have won two of the three matches this season, including back-to-back victories the past two weeks in the Czech Republic and Italy.
Nummerdor and Schuil will be playing in their third SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal match, but the first without a Brazilian opponent. After defeating Pedro Cunha and Franco Neto early last season for a SWATCH title in Bahrain, the Dutchman dropped a Norwegian Grand Slam gold medal bid to Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes in Stavanger.
The third-seeded Wu and Xu, who dropped into the elimination bracket Friday after losing to sixth-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany, opened play Saturday by ousting seventh-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal of the United States 21-17 and 21-17 in 42 minutes.
After earning their sixth SWATCH “final four” appearance in 33 FIVB starts together by eliminating top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil 13-21, 21-19 and 16-14 in 58 minutes, Wu and Xu outlasted 15th-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings by defeating the Americans 21-16, 27-29 and 15-12 in 72 minutes.
Seeded fourth in the VIP Open, Nummerdor and Schuil had to win only one match Saturday by defeating 11th-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio 21-17 and 23-21 in 43 minutes. The Dutch had advanced Friday to their fifth SWATCH semi-final in 21 FIVB starts together by being perfect in the winner’s bracket with four-straight victories.
Marcio Araujo and Fabio, the second-ranked team on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour the past three seasons behind Emanuel and Ricardo and the 2005 VIP Open champions, were also playing their third match Saturday. After eliminating 21st-seeded Jochem De Gruijter and Gijs Ronnes of the Netherlands 21-15 and 27-25 in 50 minutes, the Brazilians advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Klemperer and Koreng 21-17 and 21-18 in 53 minutes.
Following Sunday’s finale where the winning team shares the $28,000 first-place prize, the men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour remains in Europe with a double gender stop in Spain at the inaugural Barcelona Open (May 26-June 1). The women’s circuit is currently in Japan where two teams from China will be competing for a gold medal Sunday in Osaka against pairs from Australia and Brazil.
