WU & XU EARN CHINA’S FIRST-EVER MEN’S GOLD MEDAL MATCH SPOT

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA, March 29, 2008 - In avenging an earlier setback in the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open, Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu became the first men’s team from China to advance to a gold medal match on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour since the start of the international Beach Volleyball circuit 22 years ago.

The seventh-seeded Wu and Xu won three matches here Saturday on Glenelg Beach to advance to the finals of the inaugural Adelaide Australia Open against fourth-seeded Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado, who earned their gold medal berth by upsetting 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States.
After Harley and Salgado scored a 21-19, 16-21 and 15-13 victory in 69 minutes over Dalhausser and Rogers, Wu and Xu avenged a Friday morning loss to 18th-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal to defeat the Americans 21-19 and 21-15 in the 41-minute semi-final match on the Moseley Square centre court. Gibb and Rosenthal had won the previous three SWATCH matches with the Chinese.
“This is a great honor for us to have an opportunity to compete for a SWATCH gold medal this season, especially with the Olympics being staged in Beijing,” said the 22-year old Xu. “We have worked hard to advance to a stage where we can compete for a medal at each event. We played a near-perfect match today to defeat one of America’s top teams. Jake and Rosie beat us pretty good Friday (21-15 and 21-14), so we had something to prove today.”
Wu and Xu became the first men’s team from their country to earn a spot on an international podium when they upset Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil for a bronze medal at a 2006 stop in Stare Jablonki, Poland. Last season at the Norwegian Grand Slam in Stavanger, Wu and Xu defeated Russians Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky for the bronze medal for their second podium placement.
Along with the other men’s and women’s team from Chinese, Wu and Xu traveled to the South Australian capital city after training for several weeks on the beaches in Southern California. “It helped us prepare for this week’s match,” Xu added. “There are a lot of quality teams in the United States, so we played a lot of training matches and had a lot of quality workouts to prepare for this week.”
For Harley and Salgado, their five-straight wins this week in Adelaide Australia Open have helped cut the deficit in their competition with Brazilian rivals Marcio Araujo and Fabio for their country’s second spot for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Entering Sunday’s gold medal match, Harley and Salgado have improved their Olympic qualifying total by 120 points to 4,260 to draw within 480 points of Marcio Araujo and Fabio, who placed ninth this week.
“That was a great win,” said Salgado, who celebrated his 22nd birthday Thursday. “We had our first fight as a team when we were trailing by three points in the deciding set. Harley started yelling at me and I was mad at him for really the first time. I guess it inspired us coming out of a time out.”
After the time out with Dalhausser and Rogers leading 9-6 in the third set, the fourth-seeded Harley and Salgado scored seven of the next eight points in the match to take a 13-10 lead. The Americans fought back to a 13-12 deficit before Harley and Salgado closed out the match to even the series between the two teams at 1-1.
With the semi-final win, Harley and Salgado are in position to win a season opening event on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour for the second-straight season. The Brazilians captured the 2007 season opener by defeating Marcio Araujo and Fabio for the gold medal last May in Shanghai, China. Harley and Salgado also won two of the last three stops on the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in Finland and Russia.
The first of 16 double gender events on the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, the Adelaide Australia Open concludes Sunday when the gold medal winning teams share the $28,000 first-place prizes. Following the season opening event, the international tour resumes at the end of April in Shanghai, China.
