Three of the undefeated teams in the US$580,000 1to1 energy Grand Slam have won gold medals this season on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, including defending Gstaad champions Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca. The second-seeded Brazilians scored a pair of wins over Norwegian teams, including one on the sand and one via forfeit.
Joining Juliana and Larissa as double winners for Brazil was seventh-seeded Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes as both teams will play each other in one of the four winner’s bracket matches to open play Thursday. Renata and Talita, who defeated teams from Cuba and Greece Wednesday, have dropped six of seven previous meetings to their Brazilian rivals with their only win being in the gold medal match last September in Athens.
Reigning Olympic champions and top-seeded Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who won the last women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stop in Athens three weeks ago, captured their two matches as expected Wednesday to lead the United States effort. However, it was the two upset wins by 30th-seeded Holly McPeak and Nicole Branagh that landed two Americans teams in the third-round of the winner’s bracket.
After defeating third-seeded American rivals Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs, 21-18, 18-21 and 15-13 in 62 minutes, McPeak and Branagh posted a 19-21, 21-11 and 21-19 win in 57 minutes over 14th-seeded Merel Mooren and Rebekka Kadijk of the Netherlands to advance to their third-round match against sixth-seeded Vasso Karadassiou and Vassiliki Arvaniti of Greece.
Winners of their last 23 matches in the Alps with three gold medals and a third-place to their credit, May-Treanor and Walsh play ninth-seeded Simon Kuhn and Leah Schwer of Switzerland in their first match Thursday. The Swiss, who posted a pair of wins Wednesday over teams from Italy and the United States, dropped their only match to May-Treanor and Walsh last July in Paris.
The fourth match in the third-round of the winner’s bracket will be a Chinese affair featuring fourth-seeded Wang Jie and Tian Jia against 21th-seeded Xue Chen and Zhang Xi. Both teams have played for a SWATCH-gold medal this season with the 17-year old Chen Xu and Zhang Xi defeating Wang Jie and Tian Jian 23-21 and 21-14 for the Shanghai crown last month.
[/COLOR]
